George F. Mahoney III

George F. Mahoney III is a founding member of Mahoney, Silverman & Cross, Ltd. His practice focuses on zoning and land development, government and municipal law, litigation and appellate practice. Born in Joliet, Illinois, he attended Lewis University where he majored in Political Science and graduated with high honors in 1971. In 1974 he received his Juris Doctorate from DePaul University College of Law and was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois and the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, including the Trial Bar. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

George’s community activities include having been named by the Joliet Junior Chamber of Commerce as its “Outstanding Young Man of Joliet” and serving as the Chair of the United Way Annual Appeal, a member of the Board of Directors of the Will County Center for Economic Development and a member of the Board of Directors of Northwestern Health Care Network. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Joliet and was elected its President for 1989 – 1990. Since 1983 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Silver Cross Hospital and Medical Center, and from 1998 he has served as its First Vice Chair.

George is a member of the Will County and Illinois State Bar Associations. He was elected and served as Will County Bar President in 1984. His Illinois State Bar (ISBA) activities include being elected as a member of its Assembly from 1986 through 1992. Since 1992 he has been a member of the ISBA Standing Committee on Judicial Evaluations, serving as its Chair from 1995 through 1997 as well as from 2005 through 2007. Since 1997 he has been a member of the ISBA Standing Committee on Legislation and has represented the ISBA on the Illinois Judicial Ethics Committee. He also currently serves on the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board. He was appointed as the Chair of the ISBA 2004 Future of the Legal Profession Conference. In 1998 and 2005 he received the Illinois State Bar Association Board of Governors Award. George is a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education and serves as its Treasurer. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Bar Foundation and serves as its Vice President.

From 1995 through 2002 he was appointed by and served on the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Judicial Performance Evaluations Committee.

George served as a Special Assistant Attorney General of the State of Illinois from 1984 to 2006.

Along with David J. Silverman, he has authored “Governmental Financing of Development” in Illinois Land Use Law, published by the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and has lectured at Continuing Legal Education and other seminars on various aspects of government and land use law. George is rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in Outstanding Lawyers of America, The Leading Lawyers Network of Illinois – The Top Lawyers and Chicago® Magazine Illinois Super Lawyers.
